HOW HUBERMAN METHOD SOLVED ANNOYING WORK

No Huberman headlock punishments if you don't work, though that would be effective.

Let’s Remember

Does this sound familiar? You’ve been a little lazy as of late. Am I right so far?

Keep playing along. All of a sudden, it’s there. You get that burst of motivation.

”I’m about to do my taxes, clean my room, then reorganize the whole closet downstairs.”

Okay hypothetical you, calm down there. This is seen in a lot of people. The need to all of the sudden feel like we want to do all of the productive tasks, all at the same time.

But Dr. Andrew Huberman (cue his intro song), a neurobiologist at Stanford University, but more known for running the Huberman Lab podcast, says there is a better way of doing this.

A way that you won’t like, but one that will lead you to do the things you’ve been avoiding, that you know you really should do.

Pick Something Worse

There’s good news and there’s bad news. The good news is you don’t have to do that thing you’ve been avoiding.

The bad news? Well, you have to do something worse than that. What does that mean?

Well, let’s hear Andrew Huberman’s example. Andrew needs to write a chapter in his book, but he just won’t do it.

Procrastination Andrew is winning, and dragging him down into the pits of Procrastination Purgatory.

So what does he do? Andrew hates spreadsheets. A lot more than you think he does, actually. So he has to do that. Whatever the hell “doing a spreadsheet” means. Doesn’t sound good.

But how does this work? Why is it that doing an even harder task helps us?

All Downhill From There

Everything in life is a comparison. We know happiness because of sadness. Cold because of the heat. The list goes on.

We have ranges using numbers. I can say $1,000,000 and then say $1,000, and now the grand looks small, only because I first showed you the really big number.

So whether we know it or not, in life, there’s always some measuring stick. Something for us to compare the experience to.

So what happens when we complete a task HARDER than the one we’re avoiding?

The one we’re avoiding practically becomes an escape. We almost want to use the thing we were once avoiding to get the hell out of the harder thing.

Not only that, it creates forward momentum. After all, if you were avoiding a thing, and did something even worse than the thing you’re avoiding, you’ll feel pretty damn good.

How In The Hell Do You Expect Me To Do That

It’s a fair point that if you’re someone who isn’t doing what needs to be done, doing something worse than that could lead to a whole other issue.

To make this possible, literally just do it for 5 minutes. I’m telling you, this makes the barrier to entry go from an intimidating gate that reaches the sky to a little door made of cotton candy.

In 300 seconds, you will no longer be doing the horrible task. You will then feel the forward momentum. And because you did something worse than the thing you’re avoiding, it sucks way less.

The main thing is always just starting. Huberman speaks on how the way he is able to be so productive, as he does manage a podcast, interviews, school, personal life, etc., is through his past experience.

He knows how good it feels to finish a 1 hour work bout, and the good feelings spill over into the rest of his life.

So here’s the mission, if you choose to accept it (do it though because if not we’re going to be upset and we know you don’t want that):

Define the tasks you’re avoiding.

Think of something worse than that, then do it. Just for 5 minutes. That’s it.

See what happens. Odds are, that task is gonna look a lot less daunting by comparison. And you’re already in your groove of doing the work you don’t want to do, so may as well get it done while the going's good.
